HAUS 1 at Atelier Gardens is what retrofit is all about.
A dated 90s office – an ugly duckling – it would have been knocked down by most.
We’ve brought it back to life, applying circular principles to transform it into a beacon for all that the Atelier Gardens campus stands for.
Once a tired office building sitting at the entrance to a historic but industrial film studio site in Berlin.
It is now an eye-catching and welcoming central hub for all who visit the global impact campus and its permanent community of impact organisations who have made the campus their home.
Now a bold sunshine yellow, the building has been entirely reused but transformed through a series of simple moves.
A new, timber rooftop pavilion and terrace liberates the roof, providing rare views over Berlin’s city skyline. And a striking, zig-zagging, sculptural, external staircase, winds its way up from the campus’ central garden to the roof terrace, celebrating its accessibility to all.
Four floors of flexible workspace sit above the new ground-floor café, which doubles as the campus reception and informal co-working, creating a central hub for visitors to the campus and its progressive community.
A retrofit project with a small physical footprint which packs a punch in terms of impact.
Creating a beacon for Atelier Gardens that embodies all that the campus stands for.
