We were so pleased to support our friends at Bankside Open Spaces Trust bring some festive warmth and good cheer to Bankside at their annual Winter Warmer in Octavia Hill’s Red Cross Garden.

The beautifully-restored community garden was aglow for the evening with wreath-making, mulled-wine. live music and light.

The event also marked the launch of Better Bankside’s reimagined modern-day Frost Fair, which we’re thrilled to be supporting in its inaugural year too.

From circa 1605 to 1814, the surface of the River Thames froze over 24 times, bringing all trade on the water to a standstill. So the people of Bankside took to the ice, creating ‘Frost Fairs’, with a sensational cornucopia of markets, amusement, food, drink, games and entertainment.

Inspired by the area’s rich heritage and lively characters, Bankside has reinvented the Frost Fair for the 21st Century, with augmented reality installations, a street art trail and Frost Fair-themed food, drink and workshops.

Bankside’s Frost Fair runs until 31 January 2023.

Held on the birthday of social former Octavia Hill, who founded the garden in 1886, the Winter Warmer is both a celebration of the garden and of all those who visit and enjoy the space throughout the year.
