HAUS 1 is complete!

The transformation of a dated ’90s office building into a bold new entrance by MVRDV for Atelier Gardens in Berlin is the latest milestone in its evolution from historic film studio site to award-winning impact campus.

Now a bold yellow, we have brought HAUS 1 back to life through the addition of a new CLT rooftop pavilion, terrace and living roof, accessed by a striking, zig-zagging external staircase.

Internally, four floors of flexible work and meeting spaces sit above a café and campus reception, creating a new central hub for Atelier Gardens’ growing community of impact organisations and changemakers, alongside film and media.

The vision we created was to build on the film campus’ century-old storytelling roots to become a home to those working to tackle the major issues of our time – from the climate crisis to human rights and food production. All rooted around the concepts of reuse and regreening – knocking nothing down and minimising waste by finding new uses for redundant buildings and materials.

The campus has remained operational throughout, managed by our brilliant onsite team, and was recognised by MIPIM this year with the Best Urban Regeneration Award.

The completion of HAUS 1 is a major milestone that is emblematic of the campus as a whole – an example of how a tired, ugly duckling of a building can be revitalised to become a beacon for all that the Atelier Gardens community stands for.

“Such a refreshing approach to developing and managing commercial property. The attention to detail in every element of this mixed use scheme is impressive. Fabrix have created a vibe here that is understated and permissive. There is a positive ‘can do’ creative attitude everywhere on the campus.”
