VALUE ADD

55 Great Suffolk Street is a 10,000 sq ft historic Grade II Listed warehouse located in the heart of Southwark, directly neighbouring the Roots in The Sky redevelopment of Blackfriars Crown Court.

The building was formerly occupied by Spicer Bros Paper Merchants in the late 19th Century and has been left largely untouched and vacant for the past 40 years. The building was acquired in February 2021 with the aim of bringing it back into use through careful restoration and modernisation. The warehouse provides a unique opportunity to combine unaltered Victorian architecture with the new development at Roots in The Sky.

The vision for the project focuses on celebrating the building’s original features, which include the impressive floor to ceiling heights, slim cruciform cast iron columns which run throughout each floor and the blockwork glass windows. Remarkably, many original warehouse features remain, reflecting the durable and robust architecture that has stood the test of time. Refurbishment of the existing building structure will deliver sustainable, characterful, future-fit space which will actively contribute to, and re-connect with, the surrounding community who have a long-lasting appreciation for the building.

55 Great Suffolk Street is a rare example of the warehouses which once stood in Victorian Southwark. What an opportunity to revitalise one of the last historic buildings of real personality in central London
